This article deals with the causes of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the cancer of the cells present in the breast. Both men and women can get breast cancer and the symptoms vary from a lump in the breast to puckering of the skin, inverted nipple, Paget’s disease of the breast, discharge from a single nipple, pain, swelling, redness, itching, tingling, etc. All these symptoms do not happen at one time and each symptom can be a manifestation of another breast disease.

IMP: There is no etiology for 95 percent of breast cancer cases, whereas approximately 5% of the new breast cancer cases are said to be attributed to hereditary syndromes. Particularly the carriers of the breast cancer susceptible genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 are at a 30 to 40 percent increased risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer, depending upon which part of the protein gets mutated.
Some Causes:
If you have personal history of breast cancer, then you have a higher risk of getting cancer in the other breast. Family History – A woman’s chances of getting are higher if there has been breast cancer in the family; if her mother, sister or daughter had breast cancer. The risk is higher if the family member got it before the age of 40 years. If any other relative has breast cancer in her mother’s or father’s family, then also the risk increases. Certain women have different looking cells, which look abnormal under a microscope. If the woman has certain types of abnormal cells, like atypical hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), it increases the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer is more often diagnosed in women of Caucasian descent than Asian, Latin or African American women. Physical inactivity can have an increased risk of breast cancer in women. Being active helps, as it may decrease the risk by avoiding weight gain and obesity. Tamoxifen may sometimes react unfavourably with certain anti depressants that are used for the prevention of breast cancer recurrence.
